We’ve selected this series because children can relate to Caillou’s passion for exploring and discovering life, his frustration in difficult circumstances and how grown-ups can guide children in working through difficult situations.

Madeline

Based on the popular children’s book, the series follows the adventures of a sweet girl named Madeline who lives in a boarding school in Paris. Madeline has many friends including Genevieve, Pepito and Ms. Clavel. Madeline and her friends often go on funny adventures in Paris. Ms. Clavel on the other hand, while being protective never deprives the girls of their freedom to explore the world and to create. The adventures of Madeline series is focused on friendship and discovering the world.

We’ve selected this series because Madeline is an irresistibly sweet girl with the ability to find a solution in any situation. She displays great generosity in getting all her friends to work all night in wrapping gifts for Santa when she finds out his helpers have got a cold; she gives up on ice cream in favor of a “cone of broccoli” when she believes she’s too small for it. Children comprehend the altruism and generosity and are therefore highly engaged in the many adventures of Madeline.

DinoSquad

Five teenager friends, Roger, Caruso, Max, Fiona, and Buzz have the ability to turn into dinosaurs after they were covered in ooze which mutated their DNA. Their half human and half velociraptor science teacher, Ms. Moynihan, teaches them how to use their powers to protect Earth against Victor Veloci who wants to turn humanity into dinosaurs. DinoSquad focuses on action and adventure.

This series gets children to relate to, adventure, team spirit and a sense of doing the right thing, even if it means getting in danger to save a little dog from drowning.

Horseland

Horseland follows the adventures of seven children (Sarah, Alma, Molly, Chloe, Zoe, Bailey, and Whip) and their horses (Scarlet, Button, Calypso, Chili, Pepper, Aztec, and Jimber). The children and their horses go on many adventures where they usually face some sort of danger or competition and succeed in overcoming it. This cartoon series focuses on friendship, competition, cooperation, and adventure.

Horseland features both girls and boys competing each against other which is always of interest to children. Even very young children comprehend the nature of arrogance and bragging and how that may lead to self-defeat. Children also appreciate that communication can resolve conflict. These fundamental values are portrayed in an engaging manner children can relate to.

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake is a young energetic girl who loves strawberries and wears a pink hat with strawberries on it. She has many friends such as Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie, Orange Blossom, and others. Strawberry Shortcake is a happy girl who’s good at dancing, cooking, and acting and likes to help her friends. Strawberry likes to travel to nearby lands and has enemies including The Peculiar Purple Pie Man and Sour Grapes. This series is mostly about friendship and adventure.

Strawberry is a kind, sweet, happy little girl always searching for solutions. She is very creative when making treats to offer to her friends and displays affection for her sister and friends by putting a lot of thought into their gifts. Kids are highly responsive and understanding of Strawberry’s motives in buying the appropriate gift for each person.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs follow the adventures of a group of adorable small blue creatures who live in mushroom houses deep in the forest. Main characters include Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Greedy, and other Smurfs named after their personality or profession. In each episode, the evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael, try to find the Smurf village to catch the Smurfs. The Smurfs series is about friendship, cooperation, and the triumph of good over evil.

We’ve selected this series because children are quick to notice individual differences. Children are eager to learn how Brainy Smurf is different to Lazy Smurf, or Artist Smurf, as well as how each and every Smurf plays an important role in their society. Children also enjoy watching the Smurfs working together to solve life’s day-to-day problems or simply enjoying life together.

Inspector Gadget

Inspector Gadget, a human being with various bionic gadgets built into his body, is a clumsy dim-witted detective that manages to solve all police cases! “Go Go Gadget hand”, is one of his favorite expressions! Although he is equipped with many gadgets, Gadget is clueless and incompetent and often manages to overcome dangerous situations due to sheer luck. He is also secretly helped by his little niece, Penny, and her intelligent dog, Brain, who solve many of his cases in the end.

Penny’s brilliance makes her a great role model and teaches children to be smart and creative when seeking solutions to problems. This series helps children learn to keep trying when faced with a difficult case and to realize that systematic group work always pays off.

Heathcliff

Heathcliff is a smart orange street cat, who spends most of his time trying to turn a dustbin over onto people’s heads. He loves to fight anyone but will not fight girls. He will also lie, cheat and steal to get himself some food, but beneath it all, he’s a good guy.

Children watch Heathcliff win classic good-vs-evil battles while becoming the hero who brings justice and fairness to the neighborhood. No one feels afraid on the street because Heathcliff knows how to take good care of his friends. Kids just love watching Heathcliff sabotaging his own plans with his goofy behavior, but luck is on his side and his crafty ways save him from disaster.

Sabrina

Sabrina is a 12-year-old girl attending middle school. She lives with her two aunts and her loud-mouthed cat, all of whom advise Sabrina on the use of magic. Most episodes center on typical middle school problems, along with those stemming from Sabrina’s inexperience with or misuse of various magic, witchcraft and extremely powerful and complex spells. Sabrina and her best friend Chloe often use magic from the “Spooky Jar”; a cookie jar in the family’s kitchen containing a genie-like being. The magic is used for all sorts of perceived emergencies, ranging from trying to fit into skinny new clothes, to turning Sabrina’s crush Harvey into a superhero. By the end of each episode, her innate magical abilities unintentionally backfire.

Preadolescent children will find comfort in Sabrina’s dilemmas. Sabrina discovers that using magic is usually not the solution for her day-to-day problems. This series helps children learn to take responsibility for their actions and to enjoy their efforts’ results.

Dennis the Menace

Dennis, the blond boy with a cowlick and a mischievous personality, gets into numerous scrapes and adventures with his dog Ruff and his friends. Dennis is an impulsive, angel-faced little devil who is always getting into scrapes which end up tormenting his hapless next-door neighbor, Mr. Wilson, even though Dennis always means well. Dennis finds himself involved in wild adventures, some of which are fantasy-based like the international espionage and trips into the past stories, but always manages to save the day.

Dennis is a misunderstood child. He is always trying to help but somehow he gets himself and others into trouble. No matter what, he is a vivid child with lots of imagination that never gives up going after an adventure. This being a common story most parents can relate to.
